Solar Powered panels are supposed to save animals and yourself.

The panther is one of the most famous endangered animals in the world and has been long protected in Florida. However, from 1978 to 1994, about 20 panthers met their ends in car accidents; and in 2001, merely in 3 months, 7 panthers were killed by cars when they were running cross the road. Yeah there’s a crying need for more roads, but at the same time the wildlife needs to be preserved. And the Solar Powered panels are therefore designed to protect animals from road-kills. Built with infrared sensors, these panels will detect an animal or a car within the vicinity and then reduce possible dangers either by beaming out subtle blinking LED lights to inform the drivers or illuminating the sideways to warn the animals.

First off, 18 car deaths over 20 years is actually a damned GOOD record for cougars. On top of that cougars are classified as Least Concern. Not to say you shouldn’t feel bad about killing a cougar, but that you honestly shouldn’t worry too much for the species as a whole if on average the car-to-cougar death rate is less then one cougar per year.

Looks like a great idea. (Quick correction: The second diagram shows “Elements & Demention.” I think they mean “Dimension” rather than some form of senility.)

This sounds needlessly expensive. Whistles that only animals can hear, can be attached to cars for a pittance. Sometimes the least complicated answer is the best. These whistles are available at any hardware store and mount without any screws

Those whistles don’t work.

Think anything that helps animal versus car is good.
Aren’t panthers actually Leopards? Not actually native to N.America

Yaro, while missing the point, illuminates an important idea. This light thing only has a chance if it’s marketed to protect People and Property from animal damage.

I think this is a great idea, no matter how many animals are saved over a period of time. I think the point here was that it works on “endangered animals” such as panthers, as an example. Picking apart whether or not their example is an animal in danger of becoming extinct or not has nothing to do with the product and it’s potential to save lives. I live in an area where moose-car collisions end tragically for both moose and people. These devices would save lives and are probably cheaper than the 20′ tall chain-link animal fencing lining our highways.

most people don’t even care about wild animals’ safety. this product would only be effective if sold as a product for protecting cars. but then, most people know the chance of an animal darting out in front of their car at night is quite slim, so they wouldn’t want to pay for it. they would protest if federal tax dollars were used to pay for this technology.
