Possibly nobody could figure out why the Yale mechanical engineering students designed the weird bike with a spokeless rear wheel, as that didn’t help to improve the bikes. Actually, the answer is quite simple: they designed it just because ‘it looks cool’. It changed the regular structure and mechanical properties of the conventional bikes, employing a drive cog that meshes with a planetary gear on the rim to drive the bike forward.
