School on the Bridge

“The Bridge School”, running through an old village in Fujian Province in China to connect the two sides, wins Li Xiaodong this year’s “Aga Khan Awards” due to its special structure and multi functions. Contrast to the old village is full of stone-built houses, “The Bridge School” utilizes modern and frugal steel and bamboo as main materials, giving the building a refreshing and stylish look. Except for serving as a school, the structure also doubles as a public library and a performance space as well.

LED Nostalgic Clear Bulb

Launched by Japan-based Panasonic, this is the world’s first LED bulb that uses clear glass to show the light source. It features a single filament, coming with a power of 4.4 watts while lasting for over 40,000 hours. Requiring no time to get prepared, the bulb offers 100% of the light once you switch it on, and thus quite ideal for public places like the stairs and toilets. As a bonus, the bulb is announced to get a high efficiency, even remaining high lumen of 70% at end of life.

Named as “Tobii Eye Asteroids”, the gaming machine comes with only one “start” button, and requires you to use your eyes to interact with games. Do you wanna to have a try? I don’t, just because I cannot get used to anything without a keyboard or touchscreens. If only using my eyes to save the earth, oh god, the result would disappoint you.

Fabric Made from Milk

Milk can build your clothes? German biochemist/fashion designer Anke Domaske says “yes”. The young lady recently received an innovation award from the German Textile Research Association, due to her creation of the hypoallergenic fabric made from sour milk. Quite surprisingly, the fabric is not cheap to make, costing even more than the money spent in producing organic cotton fabric. On the other hand, Domaske’s fabric actually needs only 2 liters of water for 1 kilogram of fabric, compared to more than 10,000 liters of water required to make the same amount of cotton. So what do you think, the money or the water is more important?

Scientists from Osaka University applied the augmented reality technology into real life and developed this wearable “Parasitic Humanoid” system that allows people to directly guide the hands of others even at a far-away distance. The guidance system is composed of three parts, including a head-mounted display, a Panasonic laptop and an HD camera.
