Fruit Wash Label

Two things, both the labels and water-resistant wax, are really annoying elements that I never want to see on my apples. But they’ve still been there for quite a long time, until the Fruit Wash Label to end them. From Amron, the new label can serve as an organic soap to wash off the water-resistant wax, when it is rubbed with water. In that case, labels are never discarded to leave a footprint to the environment, and meanwhile the fruits we eat will be much cleaner for healthy diet.

Origami That Folds Itself

The material is really magic, as it can fold up itself automatically once you shine the light on it. But as a matter of fact, the principle of the origami is quite simple: different types of materials feature different levels of ability to absorb energy. So you can successfully do the experiment too: prepare a sheet of pre-stressed plastic, print bold black lines onto it, trim the sheet into the shape you want, and shine an infra-red light on it – look, the material then  folds itself. World’s Smallest Electric Vehicle Made from a Molecule

How small do you think an electric vehicle would be? Scientists from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands have created the world’s smallest electric vehicle that is made from a synthetic molecule. The EV comes with four motors too, and powered by electrons to make it move forward. There’re some limitations to this micro-EV of course, as it could only operate at low temperatures and the molecules need to be kept still by a vacuum before they are activated.

While we don’t need to take a bullet-resisting device all the time, it is still nice to see this Ballistic Clipboard launched by Impact Company. Initially designed to ensure the safety of corps who might get attacked by the violent people, the clipboard is lightweight for easy portability while really serves to stop the moving bullets. Airdrop by Edward Linnacre

With several years spent on observing southeastern Australia’s Murray Darling basin, the Swinburne University of Technology student Edward Linnacre has created a low-tech device to solve the problem of water-lack in arid climates. His idea is the Airdrop, which collects moisture from the air and then store water under the ground for use. The results turned out good, and in his initial prototype Linnacre produced about a liter of water in one day. Also due to Airdrop‘s wonderful performance, the device now brings to Linnacre this year’s James Dyson Award. Congratulations.

World’s Largest Windows Phone

You don’t have a Windows Phone?! Hmm, apparently the Microsoft Company thought you should have been using their products and they unveiled a 55 feet high Windows Phone at NYC’s Herald Square recently, to let you know and use their products. It is announced “the World’s Largest Windows Phone”, comprised of control rooms, display stages and decorative tiles too. Whenever the phone is demonstrating its perfect functions such as music or game, several people would then appear on the stage and offer a live show. Really impressive, how I wish I could be there!

Balloon Input Device

Can balloons be used as an input device? Even though currently they cannot serve as functionally as keyboards or touchscreens, the system invented by a research group from Osaka University indicates that a balloon is really able to input and send your messages. With a pressure sensor and a microphone built inside the balloon, it can detect the distinctive sounds of stroking, striking the balloon or feel the change the pressure when it is squeezes, so as to recognize your actions.

The Zoological Institute at the University of Kiel has drawn an inspiration from geckos and insects which have an ability to defy gravity, to develop a new dry adhesive tape that features quite outstanding performance.
