Sharp’s 12.1-Megapixel, 1/3.2-inch CMOS camera module is rightly what many cellphone manufacturers are waiting for, as it would help to create slender designs in the future. Researchers from Queen’s University in Kingston have invented a thinnest cellphone we’ve ever met. It looks no thinner than a credit card and features a good flexibility that allows the users to bend it in various ways. Moreover, as you bend it, you’re actually controlling the phone: making a corner to bookmark a page or flipping the corner to get a new page. Really amazing and possibly such “bend gestures” method will be an overwhelming trend of the future too.

Japan often brings us with new telecom products and concepts and this time some designers from this eastern country have come up with a prototype that resembles a human body.

It is a collaborative work between Osaka University, the mobile telephone operator NTT DoCoMo and other institutes. Via such a design, the researchers aim to make “the mobile phone feel like the person you are talking to” and they proudly described their gadget as a “revolutionary telecom medium”. It is indeed innovative, coming with an outer coating that feels like human skin, installed with a microphone in the head, and featuring a light-emitting chest that will change its color when in different modes. According to the researchers, this cellphone may come into commercial production.

Taking the mobile designs to a new altitude, Tokujin Yoshioka has created a new cellphone that goes apt to its name “X-Ray”. Not only the name is apt, in fact the unique cellphone is really transparent that allows the users to see through to check out the inner parts. Though it’s only a concept at present, the X-Ray has already been on display at KDDI Designing Studio in Tokyo from 19 October.

What could also control your cellphones except for you fingers and sound? Right here the XWave headset gives us an exciting answer: your mind. After having picked up tiny electrical signals that change along with your thoughts, the XWave then turns them into signals that can control your phone. Cellphone designers and manufacturers have never ceased to amaze us, and recently Du Jun has created a concept Sony Ericsson FH Mobile Phone that features a turning point. Just based on that design, FH’s dual screens can be rotated sideways to create a wide screen display for media viewing and web browsing. The phone can also serve as an intercom when split into two, which allow instant communication via Bluetooth connectivity.

Researchers at Nokia Research Center unveiled the ‘Mobile Radar’ during “Demo House 2010″. Using the same technology adopted by the police to give you a ticket for speeding, the device could measure an object’s distance, speed and direction. Therefore, you can control your cellphone via simple gestures without touching it. For example, you only need to wave your hands in front of your phone if you want to adjust its music player’s volume. Check out the video below to see how the ‘Mobile Radar’ is used.

It is good to preview what the world would be like 10 or 20 years later, and all that is founded on the development of technology. But imaginations go faster, and the Pen Concept Mobile Phone here just gives us a chance to know what our cellular phones look like in the future.

It is comprised of three pens that act as the keyboard of the handset and a stretchable touch panel (which works as a display) hidden between two pens. Although one of the three pens could be used independently to write on the display, almost everything is based on voice control.

The conceptual cellphone from Nokia is achieved by a young Chinese designer, Daizi Zheng. Different from usual mobiles powered by lithium battery, the eco-friendly phone adopts bio battery (which generates electricity from carbohydrates) as the power source. Therefore you only need to buy a can of cola to power your phone when the battery dies out, and claimed by Daizi Zheng, “Bio battery has the potential to operate three to four times longer on a single charge than conventional lithium batteries”. So it would be nice to see this practical concept hit the marketplace soon.
