Missing the old days during which you can flip through your paper book pages? You can do the same thing with your digital documents now, with the help of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s new e-reading system. It brings several book-like capabilities to tablets and smartphones, allowing the users to flip through pages or riffle through the whole sheaves of them, both forwards and backwards. Except for that, the system also features some functions that are not aren’t necessarily book-like, such as to control how many pages are flipped by varying either the number of fingers applied to the screen, the speed of finger gestures, or the amount of time that the finger is applied. Firstly adopted by Tom Caudell in the early 1990s, ‘augmented reality’ has finally reached the December edition of men’s magazine Esquire. After experimenting with things like origami (May edition) and e-ink (October 2008 edition), this time, Esquire will invite the readers to interact with the magazine via a PC. A C++ application is needed to recognize a black and white patterned marker on the printed page and then translate it into a video sequence enhanced by 3D animation on the computer screen. The goal of the ‘Sniff Test’ is to measure the degradation of old books, and therefore to preserve them in proper ways.
