Esquire magazine to release augmented reality edition

Firstly adopted by Tom Caudell in the early 1990s, ‘augmented reality’ has finally reached the December edition of men’s magazine Esquire. After experimenting with things like origami (May edition) and e-ink (October 2008 edition), this time, Esquire will invite the readers to interact with the magazine via a PC. A C++ application is needed to recognize a black and white patterned marker on the printed page and then translate it into a video sequence enhanced by 3D animation on the computer screen. ‘Sniff Test’ to Measure Degradation of Old Books

The goal of the ‘Sniff Test’ is to measure the degradation of old books, and therefore to preserve them in proper ways.

Most people may not pay special attention to the musty taste released by books, but the scientists have proved 15 chemicals contained in that smell would help us a lot to deduce the age of a book. The method, claimed the researchers, is also applicable to historical artifacts.
