Congratulation that Jake Tyler has found cardboard’s new function and made a vacuum cleaner with the material. As most parts of this vacuum cleaner are finished with cardboard, it is quite convenient for the users to change its components with new ones. Besides, the device is coated with anti-fire material so that it is safe and durable for use.

When Anirudha Rao found that expanded polystyrene helmets only protect the users’ heads 16 percent of the time during a crash as polystyrene does little to absorb impact energy, the designer offered us a much effective alternative of cycling protections: ‘Kranium’.

 Exhibited during London Design Week 2010 at Designersblock, the new helmet is made from cardboard and features several ribs that will flex and de-flex during a crash to absorb the energy of impact. When tested against British (EN 1078) standards at the imperial college, ‘Kranium’ was found to have the ability of absorbing four times the amount of impact energy as that of regular helmets. And we bet that exciting news will surely make ‘Kranium’ the most popular one on the helmet market.

I am ready to bet you were preparing to make some cardboard wheelers and handles at home. Just like what David Graham have done to create the Move-It concept. It’s an easy do-it-yourself project, consisting of wheels and handles that are made from cardboard. The parts are self-adhesive, making them easy to assemble; the handles are available in two different types, allowing you to haul the cargo in any positions that best suit you. And most importantly, the simple Move-It concept makes moving the cargo no longer a trouble and everyone can easily handle it.

If you don’t have enough money to spend on racing cars but still want to experience high speed, you should at least possess certain wisdom. Because with the power of invention and imagination, everyone can make an awesome interactive race course, just as the sputnic guys have done. Using old paper board, these guys created a RACER Interactive Video Game Installation that allows the players to drive from a first perspective as the small RC car that’s equipped with a wireless video camera is running on the track. So even if you’re simply sitting on a chair, you can still feel like that you’re driving a real car! Really cool!

As we become more and more technologically inclined, the books we read has followed the same trend. But while most others prefer to read online, the London designers Campaign are still keeping their deep love for paper books. Therefore Campaign has designed a cardboard bookshop for the London Festival of Architecture, to celebrate the art form of the printed publication. Named as Foldaway Bookshop, the store is stocked by RIBA Bookshops and sells latest must-have high quality publications and the most coveted architecture classics. Pity that the shop opens just for 13 days and it will be recycled at the end of the Festival.

The ‘Clever Little Bag’, a collaborative work between yves behar / fuse project and Puma, was invented as a result of the idea to promote energy efficiency and conservation. The new packaging includes a cardboard sheet and a bag but has no tissue paper, therefore taking up less space and weighing much lighter than usual shoes boxes.

What’s cardboard plus originality? It’s the Cardboard Baggage, which also doubles as a multi-functional rack to keep your shoes, books and other items when reassembled. One would expect it a rigid and fragile container, but the baggage is actually quite elegant and durable. And, the most important thing is that the paper luggage is more eco-friendly than those made from plastic and other materials.

The packaging cardboard also acts as a record player? Though it’s hard to believe, the video after the jump proves that is totally true. It is a hand-operated record player designed to demonstrate the GGRP’s perfect sound engineering capabilities. But why the cardboard could work as a player is mainly attributed to the special structure of the cardboard, which would create certain vibrations, once the needle of the record moves on it. According to the company, the record is supposed to be played at 45 revolutions per minute.

Designed by Keung Caputo, these boxes would offer you a luxurious resort, because each of them is created with a cardboard bed, pillow and dedicate interior decorations. Four different themes are available for you to choose from. But the biggest problem with the cardboard hotels may be that no smoking is permitted if you want to be safe…Just kidding.

To do away with those not-so-eco-friendly materials used to manufacture computers, Brenden Macaluso has come up with ‘Recompute’, a sustainable desktop computer with a slick cardboard case. Though looks bit of fragile, it is a fully functioning computer that uses an Intel Core Duo CPU with 2GB RAM, and also has 8 USB ports for you to add external components. But there’s still one problem about the possible ignition, due to its cardboard materials. Well, in fact you needn’t worry about that, because cardboard won’t burn until 258°, and that’s much higher than the 120° at which plastic melts.

Remember that ‘Shavings Stool’ from Israeli? Similarly, the Paper Chair is made from paper, too. But this time, it is the cardboard rather than sawdust that becomes the main material. You think it couldn’t bear your weight? Check out pictures below and you’ll change your opinion. And the key point that makes the chair firm and stable is the foam filled inside the paper board.

And now here is another one that is more practical. The new two-in-one cupboard includes a hidden table that could be completely separated from the cabinet, and therefore allowing you a free use.

During the London design week 2009, a collection of cardboard furniture became one of the most eye-catching gadgets for its special paper material.
