You’re rightly the person that controls your own time, no matter how fast or slow the real time passes… That sounds sweet and nice, and that’s why I love the idea of “Your Clock” put forward by Breadedescalope Design Studio. Simply by offering a cord, the clock allows the users to control the passage of time: the timepiece will hold time still until you pull the cord to let the numbers flip.  So what do you think? Time is a mystery, while Hans Andersson’s LEGO Clock makes time more complex and mystical. Named as “Time Twister”, the Rubik’s Cube-esque LEGO Clock is constructed with two Mindstorm, five motors and black and white LEGO bricks. When switched on, the blocks will then be rearranged to display the time by communicating through Bluetooth. As the designer offers no detail about its basic principles, I still don’t why and how the clock works. So if you know, hopefully you can share it with us.

Alarm clocks are wonderful devices, and among them Oliver Sha’s IQ Alarm Clock is obviously the best. It has no snooze button, but instead you have two choices to make the clock stop ringing: one is to answer 1 to 3 questions, and the other is to press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. So what will your choose, the former method or the latter one?

Japanese designer Kota Nezu has recently released this Clock Parasol, something that has drawn an inspiration from sun dials. It comes with many lines on the board of the umbrella—the vertical lines indicating hours while the horizontal lines indicating solstices and equinoxes. It is also built with a compass on the handle, which helps you to find magnetic north. Based on those designs, you only need to place the hood in the same position of the earth, look up at the umbrella and then get an approximate time.

In the nature there’re many eccentric plants like pitcher plants that live on small insects, and now there’s a weird clock that can get energy from flies and then creates electricity supply to keep it working. But in fact the clock also gets electricity energy from other apparatus, so it cannot be deemed as “an independent clock that works on itself.”

The Edison Alarm Clock, although involves the great scientist Thomas A. Edison, actually is an innovative work by David Krawczyk. But the designer does have drawn some inspirations from Edison, and eventually he used electrical current to control the clock: the alarm will be turned on when you insert the bulbs into desired time slots, and the timepiece will be illuminated at the same time. Isn’t that fantastic? Edison will surely love the design too.

Modern clock designers try to arouse us from deep sleep in a way that will give the users more surprise or freshness. And the Domino Clock features three dominoes that communicate wirelessly to display the time. “The numbering scheme on dominoes and dice developed as a way to represent numbers that’s immediately recognizable, so in a lot of ways it makes perfect sense to use it as a time piece,” explains Sullivan. But before you get the time accurately, you’ll firstly need to spend some time getting used to its unique way of telling the time.

In form the clock designed by Daniel Weil of Pentagram is something like a spinning-wheel, but it’s actually a digital one running on single AA battery. It also tells time in a different way, displaying minutes on the outside and hours on the inside of a nickle-plated ring. So you think the clock is quite special, right? Each petal here indicates five minutes, and a new petal will begin to expand whenever a new hour begins. Therefore with the flower blooming and fading and then another hour goes by.

From Robotic Hands Clock to Bungee Jumping Mint Clock, Korean designer Jongchul Kim has surprised us with really amazing clocks. And right here is another wall clock that you’ll fancy. It’s the Marionette Clock, which shows time with its hanging hand that is hooked up with the string to two Mint Boys at the top. So as the Mint Boys ride their unicycles, the vertical wire length will be changed, and the time will then be displayed. Really interesting, isn’t it?

The invention and application of the digital players marks that the mankind have entered the Digital Age, during which period people seldom use vinyl records or CD players. But we never forget them, and designer Pavel Sidorenko has applied the clock idea to vinyl records, creating several clocks of various shapes. You see, here is a gun, a bird, a rabbit, a chair, a teapot, and all of them are laser-cut. Fantastic!

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west everyday to indicate the changes of light; the spring, summer, autumn and winter rotate to indicate the changes of seasons. And now, the 12 figures that indicate the hours emerge and disappear to tell us how the time elapses. Dubbed “Re-clock”, the time-telling device features no minutes but merely 12 hours, which are indicated via 12 figures that gradually appear on the layers of cloth-face from midnight to the noon while then disappear successively from the noon to the next midnight. Simply put, the Re-clock changes everyday, “from zero to something, and vice versa”.

Designed by Seung-hee Ryu, the cute ‘Stretching’ is a clever combination of a soft pillow and a firm clock, which will do its best to pull the users out of their sweet dream by asking them to stretch their arms. Being a lazy person who cannot wake up from deep slumber, this clock I think would be perfect for me!

When asked how the time passes away, different people have different opinions. Some of them insist that time flows away like running water, and others may believe the time is always at a standstill. As for Gavin Henderson, the designer feels that time can grow taller and shorter. You don’t understand? Well, look carefully at the Vertical Clock.

It’s constructed from three bars, one of which indicates the hour and the other two the minute. As time passes, the three bars will move up and down to tell the exact time.

Mounted on the wall or held in the hand, the clock is always interesting to look at. According to the designer, the Vertical Clock can change from 10 inches and 17inches in length, and that’s really amazing.

Before you all leave comments about the “quite ordinary clock”, I’ve just had a question for you: how could the Oblique Clock indicate the exact time since it has no essential components like the gears? (Hints: the clock is made of laminated maple, custom mechanism and digital driver.)

You don’t know the exact answer? Well, neither do I, and that’s also a riddle for the visitors who saw it during the Toronto Design Week.

Presenting here are several smart designs from visual voltage exhibition held in Brussels. In order to call for more attention to electrical energy saving, the show was intended to give some visualized insight into electricity.

“Energy Aware Clock” is designed to show you the energy consumption of furniture in your home in real time. Moreover, you could turn it into a normal clock through a touch screen.
Named as “Power Aware Cord”, the new creation could visualize the power energy of appliances connected to it, transforming invisible power into visible light.
As only 5% of the energy released by bulb is used to illuminating your home, why not make full use of the other 95%? Inspired by this, designers have come up with the “Aware Laundry Lamp” to dry your clothes on the brackets.

With almost every household furnishing article becoming creative, how could your timepieces lag behind? So presenting here is a “Switchital” clock, designed with digital letters. Based on small metal bars that are controlled via magnetic force, the timepiece tells time by forming different digital letters on its surface. As time passes by, some letters will disappear from the display while the rest ones will be regrouped to show a new time.

During the years when timepieces were not invented yet, we used to read time by distinguishing the various positions of the sun while we went blank again in the night. Then never could the stars tell time? No necessarily, for we have the ‘Stars Tell Time’ clock now. Simulating those twinkling little stars, the innovative clock tells time by lighting up several LEDs on its display. For example, if there’re twelve, three and four stars respectively shown in different parts, it means ‘thirty-four past twelve’ by the time. Do pay attention that the two blue LED lights, for they represent the colon sign (:) on a digital clock rather than time.

Imagination is endless, and we couldn’t forecast what surprising creation will appear in another day, just like the Word Clock.
