Scientists from China have recently brought good news for people who seldom want to clean their clothes: the self-cleaning clothes. The new material was created by coating titanium dioxide and nitrogen on cotton fibers, and those two elements will break down dirt and kill microbes once exposed to the sunlight. Additional nanoparticles using silver and iodine are also adopted to accelerate the discoloration process. Milk can build your clothes? German biochemist/fashion designer Anke Domaske says “yes”. The young lady recently received an innovation award from the German Textile Research Association, due to her creation of the hypoallergenic fabric made from sour milk. Quite surprisingly, the fabric is not cheap to make, costing even more than the money spent in producing organic cotton fabric. On the other hand, Domaske’s fabric actually needs only 2 liters of water for 1 kilogram of fabric, compared to more than 10,000 liters of water required to make the same amount of cotton. So what do you think, the money or the water is more important?

Obviously Charlie Bucket is a designer full of imagination and innovation because he has brought us a unique dress that is made from 600 feet of knitted tubes with liquid running through. By shooting different colored materials through the tubes, the dress also changes its color to make it more attractive. So it seems really nice on paper but we may feel a little weird to imagine that we’ll need to wear a pump as a backpack when we’d like to showcase the Fluid Dress.

At the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, Lady GaGa surprised the whole world with her weird dress made from beef, but actually she was not the first one to wear a food dress. Ted Sabarese shot a series of images called “Hunger Pains” last year, showing us various clothing finished with vegetables, fruits, bread, etc. And in the pictures these food dress look much better than the one for Lady GaGa.

The new designs are colorful cloth hangers that have the same shape of the early World War aircrafts, and therefore each of them features an ergonomic handle for the users to hang ties or scarves. Also, those handles enable the users to reach for and carry the hangers more easily. Smart, colorful, lightweight and durable, this cloth hanger is surely a playful alternative to store your clothes.

3D technology is an important emerging technique developed quickly during the past few years and it has been widely applied in the fields of advertising, furniture and electronics. And recently, three designers have even collaborated with a new 3D printer that can spit out fabric structures for clothing. When three-dimensional body data is fed into the computer, certain software will then start to work and have the printer produce fabric structures, just as what you can see from the video below. On the other hand, the new technology will also result in great changes, such as much better efficiency, less needed labor and various customized fabric structures.

Needless to say, advertisement sells the products. But sometimes, advertising also helps the companies to spread their outstanding production and management theories, just as it does in the case of the “Hang Anywhere” created for Levi’s to raise public awareness of saving the electricity and other resources.

Levi’s new jeans features two red straps sewn into the back pockets and the two straps can be adjusted into various patterns depending on the users’ needs. But what makes the concept more special is that the straps can have your Levi’s jeans “hang anywhere” to save the energy needed by drying them in the washing machines. So simply put, you dry the jeans by hanging up wet and then you save the energy. Hooray!

Guess what, the cool jacket is made from vegetable leather that is grown from a vat of green tea! That’s really incredible, but that’s just what the fashion designer Suzanna Lee has created in the “BioCouture” research project based at Central Saint Martin’s College.

“The process uses a sugary green tea recipe, to which, a bacterial culture is added. It takes about 2-4 weeks to grow a sheet that is thick enough to use. Sheets are then dried down; either shaped over a wooden dress form–like the ghost dress and ruff jacket [images, below]–or sewn together conventionally. Depending on the recipe the material can either feel like paper or–more desirably–like a vegetable leather.

In testing with dyes we found no need for mordant [a substance used for dyeing fabrics] and an incredibly small amount of dye goes a long way so it’s eco-credentials go through the entire process. We also recycle a percentage of the fermentation liquid.”

But luckily, the distance between kids and parents may be effectively shortened, since the Mixed Reality Lab has come up with the Huggy Pajama, a device that enables the parents and children to embrace each other remotely.

The Huggy Pajama system includes a mobile doll that comes with an embedded pressure sensing circuit to sense varying range of human force produced by real touch, as well as a wearable pajama that simulates the hug to the wearer. So when connected to the Internet, the doll will feel and deliver the hug produced by the mom to the pajama, which would then ‘hug’ the kids wearing it. Featuring embedded air pockets and heating elements, the pajama also makes the wearers feel warm and comfortable, as if the parents are rightly here with them.

Designed by Lin Tsui-Wei, the sleeping coat is especially perfect for those who love traveling a lot. It has a dual function, serving as both a windbreaker and as a sleeping bag. The garment is made from waterproof fabric, which ensures you a comfortable wearing when used as a coat and a warm sleeping when transformed into an inflatable bag. Its lower part can be detached to act as a mattress.
