Named after the famous Italian medieval traveler Odoric of Pordenone, the “Odorico” expandable caravan looks good, functions good, and announced especially ideal for travel use. Its unique expandable architecture makes it transformable too, so it may change its shape and function in different ways according to its user’s needs. Once realized that more and more bird are getting injured by skyscrapers in cities, an architecture studio “Stone Design” has decided to build the Urban Aviary, a tall building especially designed for birds that not only offers a house but can help to bring down the death rate. It will be located in Central Park, New York, standing at 1,050,000 square feet. It will let birds build nests outside the building because of the presence of vegetation and food inside the structure. Besides, a strong beam of light will be built to attract the birds so that they can give up other high buildings which may result in hurt to them.

Climbing up the rock … to live in the Barcelona Rock Hostel designed by Polish architecture firm UGO is one of my goals for the next following years (if the concept will finally come into reality). The proposed building will feature real rocks on its exterior, while coming with fifty rooms, movie theater, spa, cafe, swimming pool, gym, bar and even shops inside. Thus whenever the rock climbers need a rest, they may either check into the Barcelona Rock Hostel or simply spent the night on the “mountain” using special equipment. So do you like it? Hopefully we’ll soon meet there in the Barcelona Rock Hostel.

In order to help the visually handicapped people better find their ways independently, a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore have collaborated an electronic cane that lets its users explore through unfamiliar ways with no difficulty.

Based on geographical apps like Foursquare, the users can find their way ahead with no barriers, because the information of hurdles ahead would be sent to the visually handicapped via a Bluetooth earpiece to help them distract from the way to escape from the obstacles. Almost at the same time, the wheels of the cane will change their direction automatically too, to keep the visually handicapped away from possible obstacles. On the other hand, the Blindspot can connect its users to their friends as well, via the combination of ultrasonic sensor and tactile GPS navigator. After the use, the Blindspot can be kept in five folds, making it easy to take around.

Honestly we seldom see laptop bags redesigned with many new functions, not to mention a bag that actually serves as a charger as well. This amazing design comes from Brad Ascalon, which utilizes wireless charging technology to convert a laptop bag into a charging machine. Now have a look at the bag: its inner tray is in fact the charger and its carrying strap actually contains USB male connector at one end and a plug on the other. So once connect the strap end to another computer or an electrical outlet, and then you can get your laptop recharged wirelessly. That’s not all! The same USB port allows the laptop bag to work as a thumb drive on its own too.

Hot egg is the most popular food in my family whenever the winter comes, as it not only warms my hands but also warms my stomach. It’s a pity that the eggs cannot keep hot for a long time, and they usually become cold after my way to offices. Thus I need something to reheat them. The ultra-portable Heater Egg Card seems like a good choice. It utilizes a wire-web and thin skin that envelops the egg to reduce heating time; features a collapsible casing that can be folded as thin as a credit card, thus to ensure us an easy carrying; still, it also comes with a USB charging style, which makes it practical in places without an electricity outlet.

Yaps, we may have different motives, but we’re all forwarding in the same direction and we all need the “Twist” by Nick Burrows. It’s transformable, capable of shifting between a bag, a microwave oven proof container and an ordinary bowl. Just twist to change it, and then you can do something beneficial to both you and the environment.

At Design Miami 2011, Denmark-based BIG Architects and Kollision + Schmidhuber & Partner have collaborated to show us something quite futuristic, and that’s actually a city paved with a digital interactive surface for mobility. The new urban design aims to liberate streets from existing pedestrian and vehicular boundaries, so as to improve flexibility in public spaces. During the Design Miami 2011, what we saw was only a very small part of the future urban, which is a 185 square meter LED installation with 3D cameras to track the movements of passer-by. The data was processed, after which colorful patterns would appear on the LED screen, along with an arrow that indicates the right way of the vehicle.

Time to make a change, within 12 to 24 months Tech Company Senseg will release “Feelscreens” to take the place of “touchscreens”. But currently shown to us is still a prototype tablet, which allows the users to feel like they’re touching something textured as they touch the flat screen. The tech is mainly based on an electrostatic-field-based system that makes different parts of the screen to produce varying degrees of friction, so that anything displayed on the screen may send a real touching feel to users.

Why does Alireza Alavi build the conceptual burner with a same shape of mosquito coils? I’ve no idea of the possible reason but actually the device concerns nothing to mosquito coils. Its real feature lies in the double knobs, a gas control knob for adjusting the flame size and a burner control knob for adjusting the spiral burner size.  With that unique design, you can get a better control of the fire during cooking and thus to save fuel at the same time.

Which is the most eye-catching swimsuit in 2011? Apparently it is the one rightly on the screen. Featuring clever and interesting pixel design, the Pixel Swimsuit has successfully attracted everybody’s attention while never lets you see the female’s secret. Wow, when wearing such a hot swimsuit on the beach, will the sea water become hot too?

On the Tokyo Motor Show Toyota has unveiled its Fun-Vii concept, a futuristic vehicle that allows the drivers to change the exterior design “with the same ease as downloading an application”. But that’s not all, because the Fun-Vii also features magical exterior display technology that lets drivers to display information on any places inside the car. To make the Fun-Vii more functional and attractive, the car can even be customized, with many themes and an augmented reality function taking place of the traditional navigation system.

Almost every time before I start my happy journey, I have to painfully struggle with my large quantity of clothes and other stuff by jamming them in my smart suitcase… That sucks! So when I firstly saw the Pumpack, a vacuum-packed suitcase that includes a pump to compress clothes, I really couldn’t wait to imagine how easy packaging would be if I got this. Very practical concept and no wonder it has become a 2011 red dot design concept winner.

Check 1-2 is rightly the all-in-one self-service check device I’ve been dreaming of for years, but the concept is actually put forward by designer Adrian Taylor. Based on Wi-Fi, touchscreen tablets and other technologies, the digital check device allows users to easily split the bill, pay for specific items, or charge the entire bill with a single swipe of their credit cards. After payment, the customer can even request an email receipt that may include a coupon or alternative return incentive. As an additional bonus, Check 1-2 also support non card-based payment methods like PayPal, thus to offer the users with much more convenience.

Once viewing the world with the children’s eyes, we may realize that everything convenient to the adults are actually resulting in troubles to them: the door handle is too high to reach, the desk is too high to climb on and still the peephole is too high for them to check out who is standing outside the door… Everything seems too high to kids, thus we need to lower them down, such as designing a special peephole for children to use.

It allows the kids and adults to use peephole at the same time, and therefore cleverly solves the old problem of how children can safely open the door by checking out people on the other side. Pity that it’s merely a concept at the time, coz I really want to get one for my little niece who is curious with the world outside. But really good work, Hyun-june Yang!

Even though earthquakes, fires and other disasters do not happen frequently, we still should always be prepared. Thus the Auto Parachute is strongly recommended to us, which is used for people to get away from high-rise buildings.

It is built with a wind hole that helps users to jump distant enough from the building, a sensor that sends out singles to make the device parachute automatically, as well as an LED light that blinks to give the rescuers indication of the location once the user gets a safe landing.  Moreover, considering that escapees may need some medical attention when waiting for the rescue, a first-aid kit is also equipped with the Auto Parachute.
