Although I’ve known of many people going to climb a mountain as they might try to live away from the city, I seldom heard of any people climbing up and down a mountain with trains. Why do we need a train going through the mountain, since commonly a mountain is deemed as places for exercise or fitness? Probably it’s simply because “some people need it”! In Haifa, Israel, the Carmel Mountain is rightly built with a 1.8 km long train track, which allows two trains to run up and down for people to enjoy a comfortable “climbing”.  With only six stations, the Carmel Mountain subway is nearly one of the shortest subway systems in the world.

“So what is the weather today?” Wait, wait, I’ll soon tell you something about the temperature with my hands to feel the Cryoscope. It’s not for kidding, as industrial design student Robb Godshaw’s Cryoscope is indeed an intelligent device that allows you to feel the weather with hands rather than to read cryptic icons with eyes. The Cryoscope is made from a heat sink, cooling fan, and a Peltier element, which are all housed within an aluminum cube to reflect tomorrow’s predicted air temperature by heating up or cooling down. In case that the cube may get too hot for you to touch, the designer also built the Cryoscope with a red and blue colored LED to provide a visual cue to the temperature change.

Can the movement of sand get kept forever? Well, that’s obviously not a question at all, since we all have a camera. But the industrial design student Leetal Rivlin has managed to capture the movement of sand in another way, by freezing it into a unique bowl. Hand made by mixing the grains of sand with an adhesive, the sand bowl not only features several layers outside to assimilate the movement of sand, but is durable enough to last a long time as decorative articles.

Climbing up the rock … to live in the Barcelona Rock Hostel designed by Polish architecture firm UGO is one of my goals for the next following years (if the concept will finally come into reality). The proposed building will feature real rocks on its exterior, while coming with fifty rooms, movie theater, spa, cafe, swimming pool, gym, bar and even shops inside. Thus whenever the rock climbers need a rest, they may either check into the Barcelona Rock Hostel or simply spent the night on the “mountain” using special equipment. So do you like it? Hopefully we’ll soon meet there in the Barcelona Rock Hostel.

In order to help the visually handicapped people better find their ways independently, a team of researchers from the National University of Singapore have collaborated an electronic cane that lets its users explore through unfamiliar ways with no difficulty.

Based on geographical apps like Foursquare, the users can find their way ahead with no barriers, because the information of hurdles ahead would be sent to the visually handicapped via a Bluetooth earpiece to help them distract from the way to escape from the obstacles. Almost at the same time, the wheels of the cane will change their direction automatically too, to keep the visually handicapped away from possible obstacles. On the other hand, the Blindspot can connect its users to their friends as well, via the combination of ultrasonic sensor and tactile GPS navigator. After the use, the Blindspot can be kept in five folds, making it easy to take around.

Honestly I don’t know who invented brushes, but I know clearly it is Valencia-based designers CuldeSac that will push brushed onto a new level, one that may feature evolutionary value. In this creative collection, each brush and roller comes with a unique function, allowing the users and artists to do something that used to be difficult or impossible to them, such as painting on the ceiling or stamping out distinctive patterns with a brush.

What is the best car in your imagination? Possibly it should be smart, fashionable, high-tech, high-efficiency but low-cost? Then what you need is rightly the futuristic cars from Mazda, who has come up with an “i-Eloop” system harnessing the energy generated each time the vehicle slows down and thus to reduce your money spent on fuels.

The new system relies on a low-resistance electric double layer capacitor to function as an electric storage device of a vehicle. Except to improve the efficiency of charging and discharging, the system will also improve fuel efficiency by around 10%. The “i-Eloop” is expected to be equipped with all Mazda’s new vehicles next year.

Although computers are still designed without emotion or spiritual excitement, they now at least can read your emotions. The new computer system is developed by researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, who have looked at 60 acoustic parameters including the tenor of a user’s voice, the speed at which one speaks, and the length of any pauses, in order to let the computers understand the change of your emotions. Besides, based on predictions of where the conversation may lead, the system can even adapt its speech accordingly and therefore to go through a good conversation with the human users.

“Catch” features a temperature-resistant construction, performing well to prevent the grease or sauce from splattering whenever you rest it flat on a pan or use it as a barrier around the pan. When not in use, simply fold it up and put it in the drawer, and that wouldn’t require too much space.
