Chemistry and art are two separate words that seemingly would never have any connections, but designer Pani Jurek’s “Maria S.C. Lamp” has now brought them together. Looking like a crystal chandelier, the lamp is actually made from chemistry test tubes placed into circular plywood bands. It seems completely nice when without anything in the tubes, but the result becomes more amazing when each tube is filled with colored liquid or inserted with flowers.

How are we going to live the future? According to Philips, in the next few years we should be using wall-mounted vats of bioluminescent bacteria as night light. That sounds bit of weird? Not exactly. Good news is that you don’t need to pay for the electricity bills any more, but instead you have to feed the bacteria with some household waste (which has been digested by other bacteria to form methane gas) so that the bacteria will provide soft green light at night.

More doesn’t always mean better, and that is a most important law for the creative and energetic designers. And today we’d like to show you what the Austria based designer Thomas Feichtner has recently created: a table lamp that is constructed from merely a steel tube.

Possibly the so-called “Drawing Lamp” is the simplest lamp you’ve ever seen, but the simple shape doesn’t weaken its lighting function. With an LED built inside, the lamp can be “put down in a horizontal position with the illuminant slightly above the desk surface or in a vertical position with a maximum distance between the illuminant and the desk surface.” Wow, so the “Drawing Lamp” is not a lighting device that can be trifled with, right?

Natan Linder and his LuminAR make us love MIT more and love lamps more. The MIT student integrated a small scale digital projector with a robotic arm, creating an innovative interactive system that can help the users to check out images and emails directly on the table top. We need lamps everywhere, in the rooms, in the cars, in dark streets…Point is that too much fuel has been consumed to power the lamps, and we do need to find some alternatives for coal and electricity. According to a scientific breakthrough made by scientists from Yansei and Stanford university earlier this year, algae can produce electrical current during photosynthesis. So Mike Thompson created a hanging lamp that uses living algae as its power source.

The latro lamp will start to produce energy when placed in the sunshine and filled with carbon dioxide and water.

All the energy produced during the photosynthesis is stored in a battery.

Are you dissatisfied with your current wall lamps? Well, what if you could just leave the lamp set into the wall when not using it and switch it on via simple motion? That’s what Kasper Salto and Thomas Sigsgaard have worked out for the Mindcraft 10 exhibition held by Danish Crafts in Milan. Named as “Yellow Fin”, the minimal lamp features two arms and a round head. To turn on the lamp, you need to pull the two arms out of the wall one after another. Its head is adjustable, enabling you to focus the beam in a desired direction.

Infectious Light is a modular lighting system made up of several battery-run light bulbs that could sense and react to each other. These bulbs gotta light up one by one when you bring the “mother” light closer to the “baby” lights, and the project takes the very name “Infectious Light” simply from that act.

The designer has also created a kind of luminous tree for these soft spheres, to solve the problem of charging.

Too bad this thing doesn’t come with any price details, but we’ve already seen that these stylish and cute lights would give your homes a refreshing look.

Inspired by the beautiful fireflies sparking in the gardens on summer nights, Vuk Dragovic has come up with an innovative table also named as “Firefly”. It has a built-in lamp, which is powered by solar energy collected during the daytime and emits light in the nights. At the bottom of the lamp, there’s usually text or logo that could be projected onto the ground to boast certain products, movies, and firms.
