As the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games are soon to begin, the London government is now busying with many projects to make the city good enough to welcome guests from all over the world. One of those projects is the LCD smart recycling bins built in London’s streets and public spaces. Each recycling bin features a couple of LCD screens on either side, which will display the latest news from 6 am to the mid-night every day. The bins are fitted with Wi-Fi too, so that they can offer a better and wider connectivity. Since these bins are nearly the most high-tech recycling bins we’ve ever met, each of them will cost about £30,000 to build.

Toshiba could hardly wait to show you what the LCD displays would be like in the future, and they exhibited a LCD panel that can zoom in and out of an aerial photograph of Google Earth at the SID 2010. The display, featuring a curvature radius of 50mm when bent, is made of a thin edge-lighting LED backlight unit and stuffed with software that can zoom in and out of images. So in the near future, you may change the size of a displayed image simply by bending the LCD. Or you can experience that in advance via the video below.

Can the LCD TVs become much thinner and lighter? Obviously the answer to that question has been known with complete certainty, after the researchers at Japanese chemical company Teijin and Yamaguchi University claimed that they’ve come up a new production method to reduce the weight of LCD displays.

Compared with conventional LCD displays with silicon solid-state devices (generating heat when used) placed on glass substrates, the new technology features a thin layer of heat-resistant silicon dioxide on plastic. The improvement results in great change: less heat will be generated and TVs could be 50% lighter. According to the researchers, the new tech also leads to clearer images, and you’ll find a lighter LCD TV on the market in three years or so.

Measuring 1.96 feet long and weighing 8.2 pounds, the remote control chum-dumping boat is not a toy but a new creation designed to dump about 4.5 pounds chum into narrow places through a remote control of 984 feet or so. Equipped with a sonar sensor, the boat can be used to search for fish under water and transmit the information back through the LCD display. But those are not enough, because the boat also allows you to get more fish in the night with a LED light.

Solar energy powered gadgets are very common these days, but most of them are not energy efficiency. Maybe directly using sunshine is a good alternative. LG Display developed a 14.1 inch LCD panel for laptop can that be illuminated by sunlight instead of backlight unit. In other words, if you are in the sunshine, the energy of light can be cut. In addition to energy saving of 70%, this new product can also offer contrast ration exceeding 9:1 which is much better than traditional ones with merely 2:1 or 3:1 contrast ration.

A 12.1 inch model at 2.88 mm width from Sharp and an 11 inch model at 3 mm from Sony have been launched on CEATEC 2007. The big difference between the two is Sharp continues to use LCD technology while Sony is pushing OLED. With a long history in LCD, Sharp continues to evangelize the future of the technology.

However, Sony is claiming a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with a ship date of Dec. 1, 2007 at a price of 200,000 yen ($1,734 US), while Sharp claims only 2000:1 while not releasing a ship date or pricing. Which one do you like?
