As a new year has already come, a new development in the OLED technology is also expected to emerge. Here, it comes! Philips and BASF have recently collaborated to create a transparent OLED that also acts as a window when switched off. Combined with solar cells, the new OLED is also self-powered and energy-gathering, capable of generating electricity during the day and offering electricity in the night. So when you use it as the car roof in the day, the OLED will stay transparent, ensuring you a bright and open interior; while you switch it into an interior light during the night, however, the OLED then offers light with the energy it gathered in daytime.

Cleverly combining light and shadow together, the giant OLED mirror collaborated by rAndom International and Chris O’Shea would feel the human’s movement and thus to interact in the term of either light or mirrors. Stand still, and the panels act like mirrors, but when you’re on the move, the OLED pixels then light up. The other interacting type is totally different, as wherever you go would become mirrors with the left parts still act as light. It’s very magical, and now the You Fade to Light has been produced in a limited edition of just eight units, each is selling for €140,000. So if you don’t think it’s exciting enough to watch them in the video, you may consider getting home one such piece.

The first high-efficiency OLED on plastic was claimed by researchers from the University of Toronto recently, which is deemed as an important development that may lead to more durable and “impact-resistant” displays. The flexible OLEDs were invented by adding 50-100 nm thin layer of tantalum oxide onto plastic, thus to achieve the same refractive index as that of heavy metal-doped glass. The new technology is believed to be producing OLEDs with a low cost, while promoting the efficiency and durability of OLEDs in the meanwhile.

How to ensure the safety of your data stored within a hard disk drive? Our suggestion is to use the EZSAVE Lockdown USB 3.0 2.5″ HDD Enclosure. Once connected to your computers, the HDD enclosure will ask you to key in a four to eight digit pin with its OLED touchscreen, and the digit pin is expected to keep your data safe without the worry that somebody may decode it. The device features AES 256bit drive encryption, which is also used by the central government of the United States, so it is really reliable to store your data within it.

Not only featuring a nicer look, the OLED lighting is also more energy-efficient, 2.5 times more than compact fluorescent bulbs. In other words, the OLED wallpaper is about as powerful as other lighting devices, but requiring merely 3 to 5 Volts to power the OLED film. But the most exciting new may be that you won’t wait for too long to use these wallpaper to decorate your room, coz they’ll hit the market in just two years.

Announced by its creator Samsung, the transparent screen also allows you to see other items behind it when using the laptop. Does that really make any sense? I mean, you may not accommodate multiple viewpoints. Even so, the concept still sounds cool and perfect to most guys. Announced by Samsung, these 14-inch transparent OLED displays will be in the shops in less than 12 months. Let’s wait and see!

Human Media Lab at Queen’s University in Ontario has developed these interactive OLED gaming tiles, which are surely to challenge current toys on the market. By connecting different tiles to each other, you can easily change the gaming background and participant members. And for extra fun, you can flip the tiles to create some unique effects: for example, when you flip the tile full with water to another tile, the water will flow into that tile, just as you can see from the picture on the right side.

Simplicity is the main character we have seen from the innovative OLED clock. Totally four OLED figures included, each of them is powered by an independent energy source and control panel. And when the evening falls, the most exciting thing happens. The clock displaying black numbers during the day time then shows the time with white figures, allowing you a convenient use in the dark. And that is based on the embedded luminance sensor, indeed.

Life is all about choices, and the OLED DIY wall decoration now provides you with a new one. As it allows you to paint on the decoration glass freely, you can redesign it whenever you’re tired of the existing one. What makes the wall decoration unique may lie in its different appearances during the day, which looks hyaline in the daytime and turns to be colorized glass when it is charged in the night.

Designer: Shane Crozier

PS: OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display), which is called “dreamlike display”, is a new type of cell phone LCD and it shows some difference with the traditional LCD in display mode. On one hand, it makes use of the thin organic materials and glass coatings instead of backlights, so the organic materials will shine as the current passes by. On the other hand, the OLED display screen can be made miniature with a much bigger visual angle and saves up more electricity.

Incredible? It is hard for us to realize how difficult it is to make a screen as thin as a sharp knife. But it is true. If you have a chance to own a screen like this, please take care of your fingers to avoid being cut.

A 12.1 inch model at 2.88 mm width from Sharp and an 11 inch model at 3 mm from Sony have been launched on CEATEC 2007. The big difference between the two is Sharp continues to use LCD technology while Sony is pushing OLED. With a long history in LCD, Sharp continues to evangelize the future of the technology.

However, Sony is claiming a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio with a ship date of Dec. 1, 2007 at a price of 200,000 yen ($1,734 US), while Sharp claims only 2000:1 while not releasing a ship date or pricing. Which one do you like?

The new OLED display technology from LG Philips could dramatically reduce the cost.
The opaque oil would float on the water and obscure a colored surface beneath — when an electric charge was applied to the field it would reveal the surface and change the color of the pixel. This process is simple and cheap.
