The development of bio-batteries is now pushed to a new level, after electronics giant Sony announced that it has developed a battery powered by paper. The batteries were demonstrated at the Eco-Products exhibition in Tokyo, where they have successfully powered a mini fan to work. Sony’s actually utilizes cellulose enzymes to accomplish this technology: after breaking down the paper, the enzymes were left with sugar that had been created from the cellulose; and then the sugar is processed to create hydrogen ions and electrons. Theoretically, a piece of A4 paper is expected to produce about 18 watts of electricity, equivalent to the electricity power of six AA batteries. But currently the electricity power we get is fewer than that, which is also a drawback of this bio-battery.

While we frequently see foldable paper animals, flowers or something else, have you ever met a foldable paper cover? Designed by Hamburg-based agency Paperlux for a magazine, the geometric cover is constructed of more than 140 triangles that allow the readers to fold the cover into any shapes they may want. Also, the cover can be used as foldable wrap for gifts if you no longer need it on the magazine.

Is there anything cannot be accomplished with paper? As the development of paper art is quickly pushed forward, it’s more difficult to figure out what the paper material cannot do. Shown here is Yulia Brodskaya’s latest work “Babushka”. It may seem quite simple on screen, but in fact each detail is subtly finished with various shapes and colors of paper. Let us enjoy the beautiful scenery of Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal and American cities now, with these fantastic paper sculptures created by Christina Lihan. Each piece is hand assembled in detailed layers, being rather rich with the layer and a stereoscopic feeling. To finish these sculptures, about up to 300lb of coldpress watercolor paper was used, which indicates the designer’s really hard work. But obviously Christina Lihan’s efforts have not been wasted, coz all the sculptures seem so great. Well done.

With more than 700 hours spent on about one ton of paper, Jum Nakao finally finishes with these delicate paper dresses and showcases them all through the internet. Each piece features stylish patterns and elegant structures but their beauty and delicacy exists merely for a limited while, as all these dresses are destroyed after the show. Why? Because the designer wants to show that “there is something more important, something much more lasting than what people see and value at first sight”.

With a synthesized method and heat treatment, the UTS research team has developed the unique composite material based on graphite, which is as thin as paper but ten times stronger than steel. Due to its outstanding features of “lighter, stronger, harder and more flexible than steel”, graphene paper will no doubt revolutionize the automotive, aviation, electrical and optical industries.

“Geografia”, by Japanese studio Drill Design, is a series of paper educational tools that aim to help kids learn better about geography topography and earth in an impressive but also interesting way. They are all made with special processing techniques and printing technology methods but feature different functions.

‘Blank’: a blank map that allows the users to fill in colors by themselves and as a result they’ll know more clearly about the shapes and locations of each nation.

‘Material’: a globe that indicates a variety of resources on the earth using different colors.

‘Sectional Globe’: pull out the globe into separate ones and you’ll know what’s inside the earth (or under the ground).

‘Memo Block’: a notepad with contour lines.

‘Book Mark’: A river runs in and runs out, when in the meanwhile, you passed through the history and come into a new world.

Many designers nowadays prefer to create something with paper, such as Cheong-ah Hwang and his Paper Sculpture Series. The usually soft paper seems to have regained new energy after the designer’s work and each of the sculptures tells us a fancy story with vivid and impressive images. So how do you like them?

What’s the coolest way of redesigning ordinary paper pieces? Well if you could cut them into delicate 3D sculptures and make them attract every viewer, then you’re definitely successful. At least as successful as Elsa Mora. Using a knife and some special wooden tools, the genius designer has created several amazing paper sculptures, which in Elsa’s opinion “couldn’t be more perfect”. Apparently Geneva-based Altanus has resulted in a world-wide revolution of timepieces after they announced to own the world’s first biodegradable paper watch “Patch”. Available in 10 neon colors, the Patch features a simple LED ticker and it is degradable in nature, therefore leaving little prints to the environment when the timepiece is no longer needed.

Though paper art is quite familiar to everybody, who would ever imagine that the soft material can create something that seems and feels animated? Accomplished by Jeff Nishinaka, each 3D sculpture here is transformed from regular paper but features a fantastic look, and you will see a dragon, a bridge, the Great Wall and so on.

Who would figure out that these amazing white sculptures are made of paper rather than plaster, if they hadn’t seen them before? Though sounds incredible, they’re really paper sculptures created by Allen and Patty Eckman and each of them comes into being through at least three working procedures.

Follow the artists to make your own paper sculptures.

·Step 1: Cast paper pulp into clay molds.

·Step 2: Remove the water from the paper pulp using vacuum pressure.

·Step 3: Take the semi-finished sculptures out of the molds and complete the details.

There is an element of surprise in the “Levita” shelf, an interesting piece of decor and furniture created by Alessandro Loschiavo. But do not let the images or the designer fool your eyes, because these A4 paper sheets are actually a series of hammered sheet metal planes. So the shelf is really durable though people may take it as a fragile one. It indeed looks like an art piece, but the shelf is also practical for frequent use.

What’s cardboard plus originality? It’s the Cardboard Baggage, which also doubles as a multi-functional rack to keep your shoes, books and other items when reassembled. The Newspaper Wood can be cut, milled and sanded, then presenting wood grain and the rings of a tree just like a real wood do.

Creative Factor: Cool machine converts office paper into toilet paper.

The Japanese company Oriental has come up with a machine by the name of ‘White Goat’ recently. It is an innovative machine that converts your wasted office paper into toilet paper in about 30minutes. After you put about 40sheeets of paper into the machine, ‘White Goat’ will then shredder the paper, dissolve it in the water, thin the paper out, and then dry it into toilet sheets. Merely costing $0.11 to churn out one toilet roll, claimed by the company, the machine will save up to 60 cedar trees every year. The cool machine is expected to hit the market in Japan this summer, at a price of $100,000.

Have you ever imagined that one day all the trees disappeared and we had to make some trees with paper? Frustrating to say the least. But possibly that won’t happen as we’ve realized the importance of protecting the nature at present, due to the Papercraft Tree by Le Creative Sweatshop. Made from recycled and FSC-certified paper, the tree is specially designed for show our respect to the Arjowiggins Creative Papers, who have pledged to save one hectare of Brazilian rainforest at the COP15 conference held last month.

Guess what, both the bin itself and the rubbish bags that come along with it are made from wasted paper, therefore reducing the “white pollution”.
