As a new year has already come, a new development in the OLED technology is also expected to emerge. Here, it comes! Philips and BASF have recently collaborated to create a transparent OLED that also acts as a window when switched off. Combined with solar cells, the new OLED is also self-powered and energy-gathering, capable of generating electricity during the day and offering electricity in the night. So when you use it as the car roof in the day, the OLED will stay transparent, ensuring you a bright and open interior; while you switch it into an interior light during the night, however, the OLED then offers light with the energy it gathered in daytime.

Exhibited during the CES 2012, Intel’s Nikiski is a laptop built with a transparent touchpad that can serve as a touchscreen as well. When the laptop is closed, the visible gap then converts into a touchscreen, not only displaying a custom Windows 8-esque “Metro” interface, but allowing the users to view power settings, the date/ time or check out their emails without opening up the laptop’s lid. Intel gives no information about the device’s launching time but announced that the Nikiski will be retailed for less than $600 (USD).

Stop it then, as a company named Liquipel will render our electronic devices completely waterproof with a hydrophobic nano-coating they’ve developed. The coating, actually not visible to human eyes, can protect the entire device as a whole, with all vital components inside and out completely coated to fight against accidental contact with liquids. Though the new technology would allow us to use cellphones and other devices in bathrooms or swimming pools, it may fail to protect your devices in deep sea, however. Thus while giving your devices a protection with this hydrophobic nano-coating, you’ll still need to pay high attention when using them in water.

I love vending machines, because I could always easily find my favorite cola there. But things are different now, as the Transparent Touchscreen Vending Machine developed by Sanden, in cooperation with Okaya Electronics and Intel offers me another reason to appreciate the machines: you love it simply because the vending machine is fabulous! As people walk by, it would display customized menus based on facial recognition technology.

Church usually means something grave and quite to me, and I seldom imagined that a church could also be “floating”, with all its components seeming to float in the air. The church is 10 meters high and made of 100 layers and 2000 columns of steel, which create four see-through walls and thus bring the church with a romantic name of “Reading between the Lines”. When viewing in the landscape, the church seems to dissolve in the air. If you look at the landscape from within the church, well, all the surrounding scenery is redefined by abstract lines.

Stanford scientists are pushing us to a new age, one that popular with transparent batteries. They’re transparent and low-cost, with a mesh-like framework as the battery electrodes and each “line” in the mesh measures no wider than 35microns.

The only problem is that the transparent battery is only about half as powerful as comparably sized lithium-ion counterparts, according to the researchers. Even so, we’re still excited because these transparent batteries will make fully transparent cellphones and other items soon come into reality.

Transparency is obviously a main trend of modern designs and we’ve come up with transparent cellphones, transparent shoes and transparent sculptures in the past few months. And soon we’ll see a transparent television.

Designed by Michael Friebe, the new TV set has a frameless glass surface and that has made it to completely bend into the environment when not in use. But when set to work, the television will produce “non-transparent / solid moving pictures with rich color reproduction and full contrast range from solid black to pristine white” as it utilizes a creative combination of conventional LCD and the latest TOLED display technology.

Time again we’re attracted by a simple but clever idea and what we’re to argue today is a Transparent Punch collaborated by Kisang Yoon and Kyubok Lee. Just as shown in the pictures, the new gadget features a red ring that can guide you to punch cute holes in a straight line so that you no longer need to guess while doing the job.

Taking the mobile designs to a new altitude, Tokujin Yoshioka has created a new cellphone that goes apt to its name “X-Ray”. Not only the name is apt, in fact the unique cellphone is really transparent that allows the users to see through to check out the inner parts. Though it’s only a concept at present, the X-Ray has already been on display at KDDI Designing Studio in Tokyo from 19 October.

What if your glass windows can work as speakers? That sounds really amazing, right? But before that, you should firstly learn something about the “Glass Speaker”. Measuring four feet tall and weighing 80 pounds each, the transparent speaker can produce a full 360° of sound and that’s about as perfect as other speakers. So how does the speaker work? According to the folks from Greensound, the base of each speaker can vibrate and the different areas of the glass slabs can create different frequencies of sounds, and hence a 360° of sound is produced. As mentioned above, you may one day see the window act as a speaker, too. Let’s just wait and see.

Designed by Estelle Sauvage, a graduate from Ecole Nationale supérieure d’Art et de Design de Saint-Etienne, the new kettle can heat water to 90°C using a light bulb. But of course the bulb is not directly placed into the water! Mounted on a wooden base, the incandescent bulb is actually separated from water by the recess of the glass jug for safety.

There is nothing special about the Light-Filled Glass Studio itself, because we’ve covered many buildings that use transparent glass as main material. It is odd that the glass architecture is designed for a school of Japan where earthquakes frequently occur, while the studio features no earthquake-resistant walls! But there is no call for you to worry over the studio’s stability, coz the designers have adopted 305 pillars to support the whole building. Made mostly of glass, the studio not only lets in enough light during the daytime, but shines like a diamond when the lights are on in the night.

Tornado and vase seem to be unrelated to each other. But the French design studio A+A cooren has proved they do have some relevance, with the Tourbillon Vortex Vase. It has two parts, an inner vessel that is shaped like a spiraling vortex and a small cup on the bottom to receive the water.

The vase is made from borosilicate glass and comes in a limited edition of 21 pieces.

Inspired by Japanese Soma-Toh, Mac Funamizu has come up with the Funny USB Memory Stick that features an interesting and direct way to present its spare capacity. Compared with conventional USB memory disks needing to be connected to PC to show its usage conditions, this device presents its spare capacity with disco lights: no lights stand for “empty  stick”, pink light for “images stored”, blue for “documents”, green for “movies” and “all lights are on ” for “full memory”. Though claimed to be the first football you can see through on the earth, the transparent design is not the only character of the CTRUS soccer ball. Made out of reinforced elastomers, the outer net-embedded shell not only emulates the bounce of the inflated football, but offers it the advantage of not loosing air. The electronic components inside also enable the control stations to wirelessly control the ball.

What you’ve seen in the picture is not water, but Liquid Glass designed by the German company Nanopool. Anything will be kept away from bacteria and dirt if they’re covered with merely a 1000th-of-an-inch-thick layer of the stuff. The system is constructed of rows of pyramid-shaped glass receptors, which will change their directions all the time to keep track of the sunlight. Transparent, flexible, then what is the item actually used for? Have you guessed right? It’s a speaker! Developed by Korean electronics manufacturer FILS, the transparent speaker is made from piezoelectric film and therefore can produce sound waves whenever the electrical current is applied. Nothing is special about the milk box except that it is a transparent one made from glass. But if you have a look at the picture again, you’ll then feel the strong visual impact it results. After all, using transparent box to contain white milk will absolutely make the milk seem much purer. We love the Transparent Milk Boxes just because we love the free feeling it brings to us.

Almost every kid loves to blow bubbles a lot, e.g. by blowing onto a film of soapy water. We still miss that game a lot when we grow up, and the designer has thought of a new way to play the same game: to blow glass bubbles into a transparent coffee table. It looks really amazing but also fragile. Anyhow, it is the idea rather than the product itself that amuses us. Hopefully you like it, too.

Change happens all the time and nothing stays the same for long. Maybe that’s also a key principle to designers, and they’ve come up with a unique set of glasses as shown here. Seemingly like two or three glasses are laid on top of each other, it’s actually just one glass.
